Joan's story

Joan is a recipient of the Independent Living Fund.

Joan has Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 2, a genetic disease affecting the central nervous system, peripheral nervous system, and voluntary muscle movement.

Before receiving the Independent Living Fund, Joan lived with her parents, relying on them for all her care needs. As a result of the funding, Joan can employ Personal Assistants giving her the freedom and flexibility to live on her own and be more independent.

“I love the way my life is now, that I can do my own thing. I like being out and about, meeting friends, goings for meals, going to concerts. You should have the right and the choice to live the way that you want. ILF Scotland’s given me a lot of choice, freedom and independence to live my life the way that I want.”
