Registration open – Summit to mark International Day of Persons with Disabilities

There’s still time to register to attend the Summit to mark International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

The event will take place at the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh on Saturday 25 November. The summit will talk about breaking down social barriers and the fight for equality and human rights.

There will be keynote speeches from disabled people and activists about their experiences, panel discussions with MSPs from different political parties, plus a question and answer session.

Speakers will include Baroness Grey-Thompson DBE, a renowned athlete and a multi-gold medal winner in paralympic sport, and Dr Jim Elder-Woodward OBE, a disabled activist and prominent campaigner who is also Chair of the ILF Scotland Advisory Group.

Who can attend?

Organisers are inviting disabled people from all over Scotland to take part in the Summit, either by attending in person or by watching the event in the Debating Chamber online.

Spaces are limited to attend in person and registration to attend in person closes on Monday 23 October. Those selected to attend in person will be notified in the week beginning Monday 6 November.

What is the background?

It is taking place ahead of the UN’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities, which is on December 3rd every year.

The hybrid Summit will be hosted by the Rt Hon Alison Johnstone MSP, Presiding Officer of the Scottish Parliament, on behalf of Jeremy Balfour MSP and Pam Duncan-Glancy MSP, the Convener and Deputy Convener of the Cross-Party Group on Disability.

What is happening on the day?

  • 12 midday to 1.45pm: Lunch for delegates in the Garden Lobby
  • 2pm to 4pm: A meeting in the Debating Chamber (Streamed live for online attendees)
  • 4pm to 6pm: A reception in the Garden Lobby
  • 6pm: The Summit ends

Registration to attend online closes at 5pm on Wednesday 22 November.
